Suzana

Suzana is one of our newest knitters. She joined Chimuk in February 2026.

She was born 4 May 1986 in the highland town of Santa Rosa - province of Otuzco. She had her first child at age 19, and at age 24 they both moved to Trujillo. She has 4 children in total - 2 boys & 2 girls.

Her memories of childhood include caring for her family's flock of 30+ sheep every single day, which brought her joy. (She prefers sheep over cows!) She started caring for sheep at 8 years old. Suzana studied until third grade and doesn't know how to read or write.

She learned to knit around 13/14 years old, practicing with straw. From the sheep, her mom would spin their wool in order to make ponchos. This is how she learned to knit, by watching her mom.

In the past, she earned an income through preparation and selling of anticuchos (or grilled cow heart - a typical Peruvian cuisine). Her sister in law, Digna, encouraged her for years to join Chimuk as a way to earn extra income. She recently joined, alongside her sister Estela.

Suzana's dream is to earn enough money to be able to find a home to live in for herself and her 4 kids.

To the person who buys her products "I hope your happy with what I've made. I don't know how to knit everything, but little by little I'm learning and by the Grace of God I'll learn more."
